At the request of many clients and colleagues for timely and brief reports
on important strategic and operational issues in the life sciences and
healthcare, PERSEID Software will publish an
occasional newsletter. The goal is to inform senior executives regarding
important new developments in information systems in healthcare and the life
sciences. Our notes on these topics are always based on industry
feedback from other senior executives and our own internal research.
Our comments on each topic will be brief and fit on a single

08-01-2002 What are the Systems Implications
for HIPAA?
HIPAA is about more than privacy and healthcare
portability standards. HIPAA means standardized transactions for all
major players in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, life sciences and insurance
industries. HIPAA also means “covered entities,” meaning all of us that are
covered directly by contract and indirectly by use of data are required to
track and be able to deliver on demand to patients personal health
information (PHI). The PHI Repository is the “Trojan horse” of
HIPAA.
